SHAI-OSUDOKU DISTRICT HEALTH DIRECTORATE HOLDS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ON ORIENTATION OF RABIES.

The Shai-Osudoku District Health Directorate held a District risk communication and community engagement meeting on orientation of rabies at the Forest Hotel in Dodowa.

A representative of the District Health Directorate Mr. Tomety in his welcome address thanked all stakeholders for availing themselves, particularly for the program. He emphasized the importance of staying healthy and working together as stakeholders to make sure we eradicate rabies from the District.

The resource person for the program Dr. Emmanuel Poku from One Health Ghana stated that according to CDC a “disease threat anywhere is a threat everywhere”. According to him, One Health means our health is connected to animals and other shared environments." we all have a collaborative effect to make sure we all stay healthy"he stated.

Public Health Emergency and the Role of Risk

is a situation that happens to the health of individuals at risk either through natural means or man-made. Public Health Emergency is not a one-person concern but a fight of everyone. When such issues come, there are people who play different roles to make sure there is management.

Update on rabies

In 2019 we had 73 suspected dog bites

In 2020 we had 49 suspected dog bites

In 2021 we had 62 suspected dog bites

In 2022 we had 98 suspected dog bites

All these figures were arrived at through.

For every dog bite case, the doctor needs to contact the veterinary officials for an investigation because rabies is a deadly disease that needs proper treatment.

If a community vaccinates 70% of its dogs the rabies causes can be zero

Controlling rabies in animals by the District veterinary Doctor

Dr. Edem gave the following;

• Awareness/safe animal

Basic facts and preventive measures

Rabies is one of the oldest diseases that is transmitted from animals to humans.

• It is caused by a virus

The District Veterinary Doctor Dr. Edem urged all health facilities within the district to collaborate with the veterinary officials. All stakeholders were encouraged to get involved in various ways to make sure rabies sensitization achieves its goal.
