Ghanaians Urged to Cultivate Gardens In Their Homes.
The District Chief Executive(DCE) for Shai-Osudoku Hon. Fred Offei has urged Ghanaians to cultivate gardens in their homes to derive economic and health benefits whilst beautifying their homes.
He said Green Ghana and Planting for Food and Jobs are opportunities we can tap into to transform our economy into a healthy and climate-friendly future.
He made the statement at the celebration of Green Ghana Day at Asebi in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.
He further admonished Ghanaian citizens to develop the habit of planting trees in their surroundings to gain from its diverse benefits.
According to him, this would fix our forest cover, protect our water bodies and reduce global warming.
The DCE said every citizen is bound by the laws of Ghana to protect and safeguard the environment adding that we should all play our small roles to ensure the sustainability of the planet.
Hon Offei urged Ghanaians not to sit on the fence but support the Green Ghana project to contribute to the survival of future generations.
He further stated that it was important we inculcate in the youth the value of planting trees and its associated benefits.
According to him, it is sad to mention that Ghana's forest cover over the years has depleted over an alarming rate due to deforestation, land degradation, and bush burning among other negative practices.
"We in Shai-Osudoku are proud to be the pace- setters having planted over 1000 trees across our 22 electoral areas and the forest reserve in 2021."
The Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Linda Akweley Ocloo decried the wanton depletion of the forest reserve naming the historical Dodowa forest as a typical example which has become a pale shadow of itself.
She said we cannot continue to exploit our natural forests for financial gain without careful planning and the commitment to reafforestation.
She called on the District Assembly and the Forestry Commission to up their game and institute stringent measures to protect what remains.
