PWDs Receive Support from District Social Welfare Department

The Social Welfare Department of the Shai-Osudoku District Assembly has made a donation to Persons with Disability (PWDs) within the district.

Out of a total of hundred (100) PWDs who applied under the District Disability Fund Programme, seventy-seven (77) beneficiaries received items, including one (1) Corn mill, six (6) deep freezers, one (1) multi-door- 400 litters refrigerator, one (1) Sewing machine, eight (8) cartons of metallic cages, one (1) Weedicide, two (2) pairs of cutlasses, one (1) wheelchair, two (2) Crutches and one (1) pair of hearing aid.

In addition, thirty (30) visually-impaired school children from public schools in the district received reading glasses, while other beneficiaries were given wheelchairs, welding machines and life-sustaining aids instead of cash.

Making the presentation at a ceremony, Hon. Daniel Teye Akuffo, Shai-Osudoku District Chief Executive (DCE), said the Disability Fund Support Programme was one of the social intervention programmes dear to the heart of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo that sought to improve the socio-economic life of the disabled.

Hon. Akuffo reminded the beneficiaries that the donations were to assist them to improve on their total well-being.

He, therefore, urged them to take good care of the items and not sell them, but use them for the purposes for which they were intended, adding that a monitoring team would be detailed to ascertain how they would be using the items and monies given them.

Hon. Akuffo also emphasized the need for PWDs to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols (frequent washing of their hands under running water for at least 20 seconds; use of 70% alcohol-based sanitizers; wearing of their face masks when leaving home and the observation of social distancing) put out by the Ghana Health Service in the fight against the global pandemic.

Present at the ceremony were Mr Fredrick Akiti, District Co-ordinating Director and Hon. Noah Sabutey, Presiding Member.

In an interview, a beneficiary, Francis, expressed gratitude to the DCE, Social Welfare Department and the Shai-Osudoku District Assembly for the gesture and pledged on behalf of the other beneficiaries to put the tools provided them to good use.

last year, a total amount of Ghc 82, 818 was approved and disbursed to 106 persons with disability.
