Shai-Osudoku awards Distinguished Farmers
As Ghana marks its 37th National Farmers' Day, Shai-Osudoku District Assembly (SODA)has also taken the initiative to award some fifteen(15) outstanding and distinguished farmers for their tremendous performance in small-scale and backyard farming within the District.
The farmers were presented with various items like fridges, tricycles, Chest freezers, wheelbarrows, Wellington boots, knapsacks among others.
With NIZZOP farms won the overall best farmer for the District and was presented with a tricycle, farm equipment, and accessories whiles the 1st and 2nd runner-ups were presented with fridges, chest freezer, bicycles, wheel Barrow among others and the best physically challenged was also presented with chest freezer and farming tools to motivate them to work harder in their farming activities.
The overall best farmer in her address urged other farmers to work assiduously and be serious with their farming activities in order to reach the highest level in life and said graduates can also venture into farming.
Speaking on the theme"PLANTING FOR FOOD AND JOBS-CONSOLIDATING FOOD SYSTEMS IN GHANA", the District Chief Executive for SODA, Hon. Fred Offei Twum said the initiative is aimed at building and providing opportunity to players in the agricultural sector on best practices of transforming food systems, for the purpose of poverty elimination, hunger eradication, and the establishment of good health and well-being of our people in line with the global agenda 1,2 and 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)
According to the Chief Executive, the Assembly has incorporated these flagship projects into their farming and local economic Development Activities.
He further stated the strategic location of "our District position us to benefit from the Kpone Irrigation scheme of which
- Over 3,750 hectares of land are under rice and mango cultivation
- 1,750 hectares for exportable banana production by Golden Exotic, the largest banana production company in Ghana.
- The Kpone Irrigation scheme also supported 300 farmers who are into vegetable farming on fifty(50)hector land.
The District Agric Director, Madam Esenam Bonsu also outlined some developments programs that the Assembly is undertaking which would be of benefit to the residents in farming within the District.
She stated that planting for food and Jobs is a Government flagship program under the investing in food and Jobs agenda which aims to promote food security.
The Member of Parliament, Hon. Linda Akweley Ocloo emphasized the greatness of the District agricultural sector and disclosed that she was a Ranking Member of the food and agriculture affairs in Parliament, due to this"I'm keen to support our gallant farmers Hardwork to ensure the necessary investment made for the constituency with the support of the District Chief Executive ".
